So I was reading 1 Peter 1 and I just love how every time you come to the Bible there is a new angle or thought just for where you’re at. This time the phrases that jumped out at me were:

“…do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance…” (v14)
“…you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers…” (v18)

I think as Christians, followers of Jesus we forget that we are completely new people! We have a new identity and when we choose to act outside of our identity we miss out on who we are and what Jesus came to die for. He intends for us to truly BE new creations. Not to talk about being or to try to attain to be or work hard to accomplish. We are purchased by the blood of Jesus not so that we could be “better” but so that we could be brand new!

So when we choose to give in to temptation(s) and when we act like idiots and when we fail to love we are “conforming to the passions of our former ignorance.” And I can almost hear the Holy Spirit saying, “you’re better than that!” I don’t believe He says it in a condemning, guilt producing way but rather a motivating, cheering, calling us to something more.

If you are truly a Christian, a follower of Jesus — you are a new creation and you are called and created to live out that identity. It’s not that we have two identities (sin and Spirit), but that we have one (Spirit) and when we choose to sin we act outside of our identity. I pray you find this motivational to embrace who you truly are as a follower of Jesus and live it out. The Lord knows our world needs some true followers right now. So remember: You’re better than that!

I love the way you suggest that the Holy Spirit is encouraging us with the words “You’re better than that!” What a positive challenge to live up to, very encouraging and motivating.
